Toy MOQ Explained: Minimum Orders in China Wholesale

MOQ – minimum order quantity – is the first wall every new toy importer hits. A factory quotes a great price, then adds: “MOQ 10 cartons per item.” Here is what that actually means in Chenghai, China’s largest toy production base, and how smaller buyers work with it instead of against it.

What MOQ means in the toy trade

In Chenghai, MOQ is almost always quoted in cartons, not pieces. A carton might hold 8 large play sets or 48 small cars, so “5 cartons” can mean anything from 40 to 240 pieces – always check the pieces-per-carton figure on the quotation (every product page on this site lists it in the specifications table).

Typical MOQs by category

Product typeCommon MOQ (stock items)Notes
Battery-operated cars & RC3-10 cartons per SKUCartons often hold 12-48 pcs depending on size
Dolls & doll playsets3-10 cartons per SKULarge boxes = fewer pieces per carton
Educational & DIY sets5-10 cartons per SKUSmall items, high piece counts per carton
Summer & outdoor toys5-10 cartons per SKUSeasonal – book production early
Customized / OEM productionSignificantly higher (often 1,000+ pcs)Molds, printing and packaging set the floor

Ranges are typical for Chenghai stock items bought through a trading company; every item is confirmed at quotation.

Three legal ways to buy below factory MOQ

1. Buy through a trading company. Traders consolidate orders from several buyers and hold relationships with hundreds of factories, so per-SKU minimums drop to a few cartons.

2. Use a mixed container. Instead of one item filling a 40ft box, combine dozens of different toys in one shipment. This is standard practice in Chenghai and the single best tool for a first order – more detail in our import cost breakdown.

3. Start from stock designs. Existing designs have no mold or packaging setup, so minimums stay low. Browse examples in our educational and doll ranges.

Negotiating MOQ without souring the relationship

Offer a slightly higher unit price for a smaller first run, combine several SKUs from the same factory, or accept neutral packaging. What does not work: demanding half the MOQ at the same price – the minimum exists because of real setup costs.

FAQ

Can I order just one carton of a toy?

From most factories, no – but through a trading company it is often possible for stock items, at a slightly higher unit price. One carton is mainly useful for market testing before you commit to a full order.

Does mixing many SKUs in one container raise the price?

Unit prices stay close to normal wholesale levels; what you pay for is consolidation work. The real saving is capital efficiency: instead of betting one container on one item, you test 20-40 items in the same box.

Why do factories refuse small orders?

A production line has setup costs: materials are bought in batches, printed packaging has its own minimums, and switching a line for a tiny run is not worth it. MOQ is how a factory protects those economics – it is not a negotiation trick.

What is the MOQ for customized or OEM toys?

Much higher than for stock items, because customization touches molds, printing and packaging. Expect four-figure piece counts for real OEM work. If you only need your logo on the carton or a sticker, minimums are far lower – ask before assuming.
