Short answer: Yiwu is a wholesale market where you buy stock goods off the shelf in small quantities; Chenghai (Shantou) is the manufacturing district where those toys are made. Buy in Yiwu when you need a few cartons of many mixed items immediately and price per piece matters more than exclusivity. Source from Chenghai when you want factory pricing, new designs, OEM packaging, battery-operated, RC, doll or plush lines in container quantities, or when you need test reports tied to a named factory.
| Chenghai, Shantou (Guangdong) | Yiwu (Zhejiang) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Production base: thousands of toy factories and mould shops in one district | Trading market: Yiwu International Trade City, District 1 toy floors, plus online Yiwugo |
| Strength | Plastic, battery-operated, RC, dolls, plush, educational, summer inflatables | Small novelties, party items, stock assortments, fast pick-up |
| Typical MOQ | 1–5 cartons per design via a trading company; thousands of pieces direct from a factory | Often 1 carton or less per item |
| Pricing | Factory or near-factory FOB Shantou | Market price = factory price + stall margin; competitive on commodity items |
| New designs | Seasonal launches from the factories themselves | Whatever stalls have bought in; copies appear fast |
| OEM / private label | Yes: window boxes, hang tags, sound chips, colour changes | Limited: mostly stock packaging |
| Safety testing | Reports tied to the producing factory, reusable on repeat orders | Traceability weaker; stall may not know the factory |
| Lead time | Samples 3–7 days; production 25–45 days | Stock: days; back-orders vary |
| Loading port | Shantou or Shenzhen | Ningbo or Shanghai |
Yiwu stalls buy from the same Guangdong and Zhejiang factories, so a stall price is a factory price plus the stall’s margin and inland freight. On fast-moving novelties the stall buys in huge volume and can still undercut a small direct order. On anything with a mould, a motor or a sound chip, a Chenghai quote is usually lower because you are one step closer to the line. The honest comparison is landed cost per carton including testing: a Chenghai trading company arranges EN71 or ASTM F963 reports against the producing factory, while in Yiwu you often have to test a product whose maker you cannot name.
Choose Yiwu if you are a small retailer filling a shelf with 50 different cheap items and you (or your agent) can be there to pick and pay. Choose Chenghai if you order a mixed 20ft or 40HQ, want new designs before they reach the market, need OEM packaging, or sell into markets that ask for factory-traceable test reports (USA CPC, EU Declaration of Conformity, Brazil INMETRO, Mexico NOM-015). Many importers do both: novelties from Yiwu, core toy lines from Chenghai.
For moulded, battery-operated, RC, doll and plush items, usually yes, because you buy at or near the factory. For tiny novelties bought by the piece, Yiwu stalls can be cheaper.
Through a trading company, yes: 1–5 cartons per design, combined into one mixed container. Direct from a factory the minimum is typically thousands of pieces.
Many do, but you must test them yourself because the stall often cannot provide a factory-linked report. Budget for lab fees per SKU.
